De CIA trek het boetekleed aan voor de onzin-claim dat Irak uranium had willen kopen van Niger. Ten onrechte, want de CIA probeerde juist te voorkomen dat het Witte Huis de onzin-informatie zou gebruiken om het volk te overtuigen ten strijde te trekken tegen Irak. Deze nederige houding van de CIA is er door het Witte Huis stelselmatig in geramd.

Het begint allemaal Bush' claim in zijn State of the Union dat Irak heeft geprobeerd uranium te kopen in Niger. Dat was kennelijk niet zo, want gisteren zagen we CIA directeur George Tenet het boetekleed aantrekken en schuld bekennen: "I am responsible for the approval process in my agency." Bush, ook de kwaadste niet, heeft het Tenet vergeven, sterker: 'Bush says uranium controversy closed', kopt MSNBC. CBS News gooit roet in het eten en kopt: 'Bush Knew Iraq Info Was Dubious'. Wat blijkt nou? Juist ondanks bezwaren van de CIA heeft het Witte Huis de uranium-claim opgenomen in de tekst. 'As long as the statement was attributed to British Intelligence, the White House officials argued, it would be factually accurate. The CIA officials dropped their objections and that’s how it was delivered. [...] the bottom line is the White House knowingly included in a presidential address information its own CIA had explicitly warned might not be true.'

Welles nietes over uranium-claim
Al in het begin van september vorig jaar probeerde de CIA tevergeefs de Britse regering ervan te overtuigen de uranium-claim te laten vallen, schrijft Walter Pincus in The Washington Post. 'The White House on Monday acknowledged that Bush’s uranium claim was based on faulty intelligence and should not have been included in the speech [...]'. Inmiddels is het zondag en is alles anders. Associated Press meldt : 'The Bush administration said Sunday the president's statement in the State of the Union address about Iraq's seeking uranium was accurate and is supported by other British and U.S. information.' In een ander bericht kopt Associated Press: 'Britain stands behind Iraq uranium charge, says U.S. withheld information'.

Druk van Witte Huis op CIA
In een lang artikel genaamd The Selling of the Iraq War van John B. Judis en Spencer Ackerman wordt de geschiedenis verteld van de druk die door het Witte Huis op de CIA is gelegd om met informatie te komen die de oorlogshonger van Bush beter kan stillen. Naast bezoekjes van Dick Cheney aan Langley -waar de CIA is gevestigd- en een dreigement van Donald Rumsfeld een concurrent voor de directeur van de CIA aan te stellen, was een onderdeel van de druk de oprichting van een 'intelligence cell' door het ministerie van Defensie, die buiten de CIA om informatie moest gaan verzamelen over de banden tussen de terroristische organisaties. Eerder berichtte DaanSpeak al over het Office of Special Plans, een soortgelijke organisatie onder leiding van Donald Rumsfeld. Beide clubs zijn opgericht omdat de informatie van de CIA over Al Qaida en Irak te genuanceerd was. Terecht wordt in het artikel van Judis en Ackerman de link gelegd met het Team B, eveneens een alternatief voor de CIA.

Zo vader, zo zoon
Dubya heeft het niet van een vreemde. In een artikel met de heldere titel Exaggerating The Threats, schrijft MSNBC: 'It all started with the now famous “Team B” exercise. During the early 1970s, hard-line conservatives pilloried the CIA for being soft on the Soviets. As a result, CIA Director George Bush agreed to allow a team of outside experts to look at the intelligence and come to their own conclusions. Team B—which included Paul Wolfowitz—produced a scathing report, claiming that the Soviet threat had been badly underestimated.' Uiteraard was het tegenovergestelde het geval, zoals DaanSpeak al berichtte in maart 2001.

De CIA begint het al te leren
Judis en Ackerman: 'In its classified reports, the CIA didn't diverge from its initial skepticism about the ties between Al Qaeda and Saddam. But, under pressure from his critics, [CIA director] Tenet began to make subtle concessions. In March 2002, Tenet told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the Iraqi regime "had contacts with Al Qaeda" but declined to elaborate. He would make similar ambiguous statements during the congressional debate over war with Iraq.'

Nagekomen bericht: Tenet neemt/krijgt mogelijk ontslag
'NEWSWEEK has learned, Tenet may not be in the job much longer', schrijft ehh Newsweek 14 juli 2003 in een artikel met de kop A Spy Takes the Bullet. Ze waren nog wel zulke goede vriendjes, Bush en Tenet: 'In 1999, Tenet presided over an emotional ceremony renaming the CIA’s Virginia headquarters after Bush’s father. When W was elected, he let Tenet keep his job. Bush was impressed with his gung-ho attitude. They swapped baseball stories and capital gossip.' Toch is er een gerede kans dat Tenet binnenkort exit is. Ook uit dit artikel wordt weer duidelijk dat Tenet opdraait voor moedwillig gemaakte fouten die het Witte Huis heeft gemaakt.
