Timothy McVeigh wordt vandaag ter dood veroordeeld terwijl er tal van vragen zijn. Hieronder is te lezen over grote hoeveelheden documenten die het FBI heeft achtergehouden. Onderaan de pagina staan links naar sites die vragen behandelen als: hoe zit het met de waarschuwingen die zijn uitgedeeld, zodat ondermeer de doelgroep van het bombardement afwezig was op 19 april 1995; hoe zit het met de tweede ontploffing in het gebouw terwijl de alleen gele Ryder-truck een bom van McVeigh zou hebben bevat; wie of waar is de onbekende helper van McVeigh; waarom is er niet geluisterd naar de waarschuwingen van een infiltrant van de overheid?

Hoe je het ook wendt of keert, een gebeurtenis als Oklahoma is koren op de molen van hen die de touwtjes in handen hebben en ze graag nog iets steviger aantrekken

'Judges reject McVeigh’s appeal' was de kop boven een artikel van MSNBC (de tekst bij de link is inmiddels aangepast, dat is procedure bij MSNBC):



Het artikel is dus al vervangen, maar 'for the record' staat hier nog een aantal zinnen.
'McVeigh’s attorneys had asked the court to overturn U.S. District Judge Richard Matsch’s refusal to delay the execution while they reviewed thousands of pages of documents withheld by the FBI and viewed videos and photographs they had received only recently.
McVeigh’s legal team contended in effect that the FBI’s failure to disclose the documents amounted to a fraud on the court, requiring a reassessment of his conviction, NBC News legal affairs correspondent Dan Abrams reported from Denver.
They claimed that Matsch made a mistake when he said the outcome of McVeigh’s trial in 1997 would not have been different had the withheld documents been discovered sooner. McVeigh also might not have been sentenced to death, they argued.
But the 10th Circuit Court rejected those arguments. “Even assuming the existence of a fraud on the court ... McVeigh has utterly failed to demonstrate substantial grounds upon which relief might be granted,” the court said in its decision.'

Het artikel gaat verder: 'In Washington, Attorney General John Ashcroft, who made the decision to postpone McVeigh’s original execution date because of the late discovery of the FBI documents, hailed the court’s order as “a ruling in favor of justice". For the victims who have endured additional pain as a result of this last month of uncertainty, I am grateful this process will be over soon,” Ashcroft said in a statement.' Een uitspraak die heel wat eerlijker was geweest als hij alleen het tweede deel van die laatste zin had gebruikt. Maarja, voor eerlijkheid en de waarheid moet je kennelijk uitkomen bij een Amerikaanse advocaat: “the rule of law has been brushed aside”, aldus Nigh, de advocaat van Mc Veigh.
