Tegengeluiden aanstelling Ashcroft 1 2

07jan01
'No senator was willing to join the objections.'

CNN: 'Saturday's formalization of the vote came only after members of the Black Caucus [de zwarte volksvertegenwoordigers] and several House colleagues objected and walked out in protest. Reps. Peter Deutsch and Alcee Hastings, both Florida Democrats, made the first objections to the session based on parliamentary procedure, a symbolic protest over allegations of voting irregularities in the Sunshine State. The objections were denied because rules require a signature from both a member of the House and a member of the Senate. No senator was willing to join the objections. "I don't care that it is not signed by a senator," said Rep. Maxine Waters, a California Democrat. "The chair would advise that the rules do care," Gore replied, triggering applause by Republicans.'
'Afterwards, Hastings said he objected to the vote count "because of the overwhelming evidence of official misconduct, deliberate fraud, and an attempt to suppress voter turnout by unlawful means.'

On the tape, Rumsfeld can be heard making several acknowledgments, such as "yes" and "that’s right" as Nixon rambled on during a conversation about African and American blacks.' Het Bushteam: 'Rumsfeld had not intended to convey agreement with the characterizations of blacks made in the Nixon conversation but merely acknowledged them.' Zie artikel..

In an 1998 interview with the pro-Confederate Southern Partisan magazine, Senator Ashcroft is quoted as praising the magazine for "setting the record straight" by defending leaders of the Confederacy who fought against the United States of America. The interview was entitled, "Senator Ashcroft: Missouri's Champion of States' Rights and Traditional Southern Values." The lead-in to the interview stated: "In his short time in Washington, Senator Ashcroft has already become known as a champion of states' rights and traditional values." It is beyond dispute, that what the Southern Partisan means by "traditional values," is the pro-slavery culture and policies of the Confederacy.' Zie artikel.

'In South Carolina, Mr. Bush was later criticized for an appearance at Bob Jones University, a conservative religious school; Mr. Ashcroft had appeared there to accept an honorary degree in 1999, saying later that he was not aware of the school's positions against interracial dating. Now some civil rights groups are raising questions about his racial attitudes, focusing on his role in denying a judgeship to a black candidate.' Over die affaire met Bush en de universiteit: 'Bush has been under steady criticism for visiting the Bob Jones campus last month. The Christian conservative school in Greenville, S.C. bans interracial dating. And the son of school's namesake once called the Catholic Church a "Satanic Cult."' Zie CBSNews.

But it is not just religious conservatives who have found him appealing; on a broad range of social issues, his views are shared with many in the more conservative wing of the party. The Wednesday Group, a loose coalition of conservative leaders who work on many issues, is organizing support for him. A new group called the Issues Management Center, with $5 million in financing from conservative donors, is planning radio advertisements supporting Mr. Ashcroft in states where they expect Democratic opposition, including New York.'
Ashcroft is dus een 'leading figure of the Christian right'.

If confirmed by the Senate in hearings expected to begin this month, Mr. Ashcroft would reach the highest office ever attained by a leading figure of the Christian right. The appointment would place him at the head of the Justice Department, a sprawling government legal agency that is often at the front lines of the pitched battles over emotion-laden social issues like abortion, the death penalty, crime, civil rights and the selection of federal judges.'

'In November, even with enthusiastic support from religious conservatives, Mr. Ashcroft lost his seat by a narrow margin, fewer than 49,000 votes out of more than 2.3 million cast, to Gov. Mel Carnahan, who had been killed in the crash of a small plane. Mr. Carnahan's widow, Jean, was named to the seat.' Het ongeluk gebeurde tijdens 'one of the most hotly contested U.S. Senate races in the country'.
