Enkele citaten uit zijn speech:

'Church and charity, synagogue and mosque, lend our communities their humanity, and they will have an honored place in our plans and laws.' Ongetwijfeld BushSpeak voor 'de regering trekt de handen af van het beschermen van de zwakken in de samenleving, lossen jullie het maar op.' Waarmee mensen afhankelijk worden van liefdadigheid, alsof ze geen recht hebben op bescherming door de staat. Met al die belanstingverlagingen voor de rijken die Bush in petto heeft, moeten ze eigenlijk ook nog worden beschermd vóór de staat.

‘We will reduce taxes, to recover the momentum of our economy and reward the effort and enterprise of working Americans.’ Working Americans is Regerings voor ‘mensen die slapend rijk worden op de beurs’. De massa’s die voor vijf piek ($5,-) per uur zijn weggewerkt in de statistieken van de verborgen werkeloosheid worden daar dus niet mee bedoeld.

'And the proliferation [het sterk vermeerderen] of prisons, however necessary, is no substitute for hope and order in our souls.' Prachtige innerlijke worsteling met een onmogelijke combinatie van gedachten; het klinkt helaas mooier dan het is.
 

Black Americans wonder about Bush
Het is de kop boven een artikel van MSNBC.

Het woord ‘wonder’ in de kop lijkt me niet zuiver gekozen. Je moet wel een tamelijk achterlijke black American zijn als Bush vraagtekens of twijfel bij je oproept. De eerste zin van het artikel werpt al meteen een bundel licht op de zaak: ‘ONLY 4 percent of black Americans who were surveyed said they thought Bush had the right set of personal characteristics to be president, and only 2 percent said he has the compassion to understand average people.’

‘Poll: Many doubt he has right traits to be president’, is de onderkop bij het artikel. Slechts 11% van de zwarte Amerikanen denkt positief over Bush ‘, in a reflection of the post-election turmoil and allegations of voting irregularities and bias in Florida.’ Zodra ook de niet-zwarte Amerikanen mee mogen doen, daalt het IQ van de poll met flinke snelheid: ‘Fifty-eight percent gave him strong marks for "having high personal standards that set the proper moral tone for the country".’
 

Verhaspelsdingels
Groot vertrouwen heeft Bush niet bij zijn zwarte landgenoten. Misschien hebben ze teveel van dit soort uitspraken gehoord: "There's a huge trust. I see it all the time when people come up to me and say, 'I don't want you to let me down again.'"

Bush, wiens hersencapaciteit al tot kookpunt wordt aangesproken als hij zijn veters strikt, verspreekt zich zo vaak dat iemand er een boekje over open heeft gedaan: ‘George W. Bushisms: The Slate [magazine] Book of the Accidental Wit and Wisdom of Our 43rd President’.
